As part of the initiatives to 𝐈𝐥 𝐌𝐞𝐬𝐞 𝐝𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐚 𝐂𝐢𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐞𝐫𝐚 𝐒𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢 𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐚, on Sunday 𝟐𝟔 M𝐚𝐠𝐠𝐢𝐨, on the occasion of the European Maritime Day 2024, the Sicilian Center for Nuclear Physics and Structure of Matter and the University of Catania opened the doors of the City of Science to “𝐔𝐧 𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐝𝐢 𝐬𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐳𝐚!”: stories, workshops and demonstrations to learn about the role of research and its connection with the sea. The event, now in its second year, organized in collaboration with the LNS-INFN, the INFN Section of Catania, the INGV Etneo Observatory, the Marecamp Association and the Marine Protected Area of Plemmirio, involved around 200 people, among which many children. In the stand dedicated to the sounds of the sea, we talked about the properties of sound, its importance for marine fauna and the risks of noise pollution. The patrons were also able to “play” with the hydrophones (underwater microphones) and listen in real time to the sounds coming from the acoustic observatories of the Southern National Laboratories, recognizing the sonic species and using the software developed for the ITINERIS project.
